Our Annual Meeting-
we had a lovely day in the courtyard of Café Castello,
where our 2015 Slate was approved. The minutes from last year’s meeting
were read, we had the year in review, the Treasurer’s report, then Old &
New Business.
Since membership is down and therefore, income is down, it
had been previously discussed by the Board and decided that, to help maintain
existing events and activities, that the dues be raised to $30 for Individuals,
$45 for Family of two at the same address, and $25 for non-exhibiting members.
2015 Dues are now due and payable J
Summary of the President’s Address: Michael Maas
Over the years, we have received feedback, from both inside
and outside of SBAA, that we do not do enough for our members, particularly in
the number of shows we offer our members. Attempts to address that feedback
include: adding the annual juried show, opportunities to show at Phoenix for a
more professional venue, and adding the new Plein Air Event. At our meetings we announce individual as well as group
show opportunities for the membership. We will be participating as a group, in the
Pop-Up show that PAC is putting on in Patchogue.
Unfortunately these exhibition opportunities have been
costly. Part of our Mission Statement to “encourage the creation and
appreciation of the visual arts” has been the Nita Elder Student Scholarship
exhibition- last year we collectively awarded $7600.00. The hurricane
significantly impacted scholarship revenues. Like last year, we will be sending
out a solicitation letter to encourage members to offer awards in their own
names or as memorials. Outside
groups are also being contacted.
Mike thanked everyone for coming, and the new Board was
congratulated, they take office on
January 1st,
2015. Desserts were enjoyed at the
gallery afterward.

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Nita Elder Student Scholarship Exhibition
takes place on the weekend before Thanksgiving, at
The Bellport Community Center, 4 Bell Street,
Bellport.
We are the only arts organization in
Suffolk County that offers a Student Scholarship Competition Exhibit for high
school senior art students throughout Suffolk County who plan to continue their
art education. Students from between 12 and 15 high schools participate in this
annual event in November. Last year, we had over 100 pieces of artwork
displayed at the Bellport Community Center. The show runs from Friday, November
21, through Sunday, November 23. It is a rare and unique opportunity for these
young people to gain experience in exhibiting their work in competition with
their peers.
The students submit a body of work
consisting of three original pieces of art. The show is judged by two
well-respected artists, and SBAA awards three (3) $1,000 scholarships to the
winners. We host a reception at which these scholarships are presented, along
with other monetary awards from other arts and business organizations.
This year we are offering our
membership, as well as local galleries and arts organizations, an opportunity
to sponsor a monetary award (minimum of $100) to be presented at the reception.
The recipient of the award would be the artwork of the sponsor’s choosing, to
be presented by them in their name. We will contact you as to when you can make
your selection. If you are unable to make either the selection or presentation
yourself, SBAA would be happy do it on your behalf.
One of the major objectives of SBAA
is to encourage interest in the visual arts, and how better to accomplish this
than with the budding young artists of our high schools. We hope for your
support in making our annual student show a memorable experience for our
participating high school students. Please complete the attached form and
return it to us at the above address by November 1st so that we may include you
in our program.
If you have any questions, please call me at 631-849-6162,
or email me at rosamariaeisler@ optimum.net. Thank you for your generous support.
Sincerely,
Rosamaria Eisler,
Student Show Chairperson

About Our Juror
(From the Hofstra website):
Beth E. Levinthal is director of the Hofstra University
Museum. Prior to assuming her position at Hofstra in 2006, she served as
executive director of the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, Long Island,
New York, from 2001 to 2006.
From 1987 to 1994, Ms. Levinthal was an art educator,
editor of an arts publication, and public programs coordinator at the Art
League of Long Island. In 1994 she joined the staff of the Heckscher Museum of
Art, subsequently being named director of education and public programs in
1996. During her tenure, she introduced numerous interdisciplinary and
multicultural programs for children, families and adults, greatly increasing
annual program attendance and outreach to the Long Island community. Highlights
of her many contributions to the Heckscher Museum include “Discovering Art
Together” programs for families; a junior docent program for fifth graders; a
high school docent program; “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the
Heckscher,” an annual exhibition opportunity for high school art students; and
“Heckscher Hits the Road,” a program for adults in senior living facilities,
hospitals and nursing homes.
Among other affiliations, she is a founding member and
secretary of the board of directors of the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA),
and a peer reviewer for the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
She served as a member of the board of directors for the Museum Association of
New York (MANY) from 2002 to 2005.
Among Ms. Levinthal’s awards and honors, she was the 1996
Malcolm Arth Fellow of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, and in 2005,
she was honored by Hofstra University with a George M. Estabrook Distinguished
Alumni Award. In 2006 she was named a Woman of Distinction by Distinction
magazine.
