This is not the first partnership between East End Arts and SCCC, but will be East End Arts’ first gallery show in this new space. Our January Meeting will be on January 25th at 7:15 pm. After a short business meeting, Chris Taylor will demonstrate the fine Japanese art of Fish Printing, as she practices it, on batiked fabric.

From Wikipedia:

Gyotaku (Japanese, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing or rubbing, dating from the mid-19th century, a form of nature printing used by fishermen to record their catches. There are two methods used in gyotaku. The direct approach is the best way to do gyotaku. In order to make a gyotaku print, one places the subject (e.g. fish, crab, scallop shell) on a wooden bench and paints one side with sumi ink. Then they lay a piece of material, eg. Paper, over the ink covered fish, then rub the material until there is the image of the fish on it.

Modern gyotaku artists often substitute acrylic or other painting material for the traditional sumi-e.

About Kenneth Ian:

Kenneth Ian's works have been displayed and sold throughout the USA. His love of art had started at a young age when his father would take him to local gallery’s and museums.

As soon as young Kenneth could he started studying art history and carrying a sketch pad and oil pastels with him everywhere he could. His original style became that of the European surrealists, as he felt most comfortable in unreal situations where his imagination could thrive. Due to economic hardships he had to leave college and his love of art and became a off shore fisherman where he spent 265 days a year at sea and away from land.

During and after this time he didn’t paint much as time did not allow. Kenneth settled in for the "American dream", bought a house and seemed to be doing well until everything he was working for fell apart.

Now once again facing economic struggles and mental hardships he turned to a place that was all to familiar to him, his art! But in redefining himself he found that the surrealistic style now longer suited his feelings and view of the world. Kenneth wanted his new style to depict his latest life lesson that
although we wish to control everything around us, we are all set in a predetermined path that we have little, if any control. His first solo show of 2012 is presented by the YES gallery and entitled "Organic Lust" it is curated by Lesley Doukhowetzky.

Kenneth Ian’s paintings have an energy of their own. They are predetermined on their own path, either meandering like water or like flowing like lava formations. These paintings are actually formed by the forces of nature, looking like organic earth formations. He depicts abstract, organic forms
which naturally blend together to create patterns replicating nature’s perfection. Ian’s trust in organic forms is evident in the lustful use of paint which creates interesting designs. Kenneth’s use of rich colors is just what one would expect to see in forces of nature. When you can not be surrounded by live natural beauty one might lust over being exposed to Ian’s works of art.

Since its founding, South Bay Art Association has offered scholarship awards to students. Over the years the logistics of the Show have changed, growing from a children's art show, changing to include other districts, then focussing on high school seniors......

Throughout the history of this event one thing has not changed: the dedication of our volunteers and our sponsors. The majority of the work to put on the show is done by SBAA members. Throughout the year, we hold a raffle for artwork that has been donated by our members, and this raffle is offered to the general public at our Membership Show and during Artists on the Lane. Through the generous donations of patrons, members and friends, we have been able to award our Scholarships. Two other organizations have joined us in our mission to

"encourage the creation and appreciation of the visual arts" by giving out their own scholarship awards during our show: they are the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Women Sharing Art, Inc. We thank these two groups for their generous contributions to our show and to our mission of providing assistance to High School Seniors who are pursuing their education in the visual arts.

The monastic artist

I've never stayed in a monastery, but I've visited some, both East and West, and I've certainly bumped into a few monks. I've also known a few nuns, but not intimately. I was once offered a job as a missionary, but I didn't like the position.

But as for the painter, I like a monastic life. Mine's not as rigid as the pros'. I rise early, paint before breakfast, correspond, paint, break briefly for a simple lunch, perhaps a brisk walk in the forest, maybe a snooze, then back to the studio. Dinner is at home with friends or family. I work each day until tired, read a bit, sleep well, and do it again the next day. Several days can pass without moving the car. It's productive--the monastic life gets results. As Picasso said, "I like to live like a poor man with lots of money."

It's all about the renewal and rebirth of life through creativity. Similar to the nuns who tend the fields, or the monks who labour in the hothouses, there's satisfaction in growth, change, green shoots, raking up old leaves. Art reaffirms life and is in harmony with many universal principles. Perhaps the studio is even greater than the nunnery or the monastery. In the humble studio one hears the constant plop, plop, plop of product. Product that honours our land, our people, our earth.

To be in touch with creativity on a daily, even hourly, basis may just happen to edge yourself closer to divinity. If our universe is indeed a creation, (an idea that competes with the idea that our universe is an idea) then perhaps we need to be on that wavelength. Pushing paint is a high calling. To do it well you need humility. You need to walk the walk. You need a well-regulated, simple life so that you might become both servant and student.

And there's another thing. It's the fellowship of the Brotherhood and Sisterhood. They are all with us--the good and bad artists in the dusty books of history, in the galleries, in the promise of tomorrow's children, or right here now as you meet them on this remarkable medium that befriends us all--even though we don't really know each other. Art can take flight in an odd but active monastery.

Esoterica: Like Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline of the ancient Roman Catholic liturgy, or the five daily pauses of Islamic prayer, an artist can create defined spaces for reflection and contemplation. The creative monk recharges and begins again. Each pause may be heralded with a new squeeze of paint or a sharpening of tools. Thankfulness infuses every breath. Every new passage is a fresh test of studenthood, patience, applied joy and creative love.

Instant Genius is a show for local Patchogue artist Kenneth Ian. The show is named "Instant Genius" because of the speed that Kenneth makes his paintings. Most of his paintings are made within a day, and they fall into a category he calls "instant gratification art" Kenneth is a action painter that spills emotion into the canvas and needs that release almost instantaneously. This show will include paintings from his "loss of control" series, as well as his "insignificance" series. He will also be unavailing his largest painting to date. A 7 foot by 8 foot wall of a painting in-titled "Surrender". Instant genius is sure to be a show that will take you from Patchogue village right into the heart of Chelsea Manhattan

Statement:

Kenneth Ian Husbands works have been displayed throughout the USA. Kenneth's artwork has appeared in various online/print publications. Kenneth belongs to national art groups such as The Sheboygan Visual Artists and the Plymouth arts center as well as New York groups Such as the South bay arts association the Brookhaven Arts and humanities council and The new millennium modern art group. Kenneth had studied art in NY at a local college before his financial situation made him drop out and become a long shore commercial fisherman. After not painting for 6 years he found the art calling him back. Putting all of his energy back into art he found the concept of letting go of controlling his art to be appealing, and started experimenting in a aesthetic way to make that happen. The paintings on display are all examples of his "letting go of control" as well as different emotions he puts onto the canvas

Rosamaria has been selected as the Artist-in-Residence at East End Arts Council, and she shared this news with us:

About my Artist in residence, it will run from September 12 through November 11. I'll be living in the Carriage House upstairs apartment. My work will be downstairs at the Printmaking studio using the printing press, working on different printmaking techniques and creating Artists Books. At the end of my residence I will have an artist talk about my work with an exhibition right there. More details later. My classes are:

Opening Reception: 9/11 Memorial Exhibition
Presented in collaboration with the Riverhead Free Library
On view through October 1, 2011

In honor of the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, the Suffolk County Historical Society will present a September 11th Memorial Exhibit, in collaboration with the Riverhead Free Library. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, September 9th, from 6 - 8 PM.

The exhibit explores the history of the Twin Towers with rarely seen photographs of their construction, and also features interpretive artworks in a range of mediums by artists Lance Corey, George D'Amato, Mare Dianora, Gary Jacquemin Leonardo Liguori, Kevin O'Connell, Mary Carlson and J. Lee Elsbree. Featured in the exhibit is a striking three-dimensional steel sculpture of the Twin Towers, standing nearly eight-feet tall, by Long Island sculptor David T. Haussler.

The Riverhead Free Library has collaborated with the Suffolk County Historical Society to document the September 11th memories and experiences of Riverhead residents in a special oral history project. Selections from the filmed accounts will be on view as part of the exhibit. Special book projects from the Library's Teen Loft and children's group will also be featured.

Dan’s Papers Best of the Best Cover Artist Show & Cocktail Party, August 20th

The covers of Dan’s Papers have showcased local artists for over 35 years. Starting last year
for a 50th Anniversary celebration Dan’s began holding what has become an annual art show
and celebration of the artists who have helped make Dan’s Papers the iconic East End
publication it is today. This second annual art show and cocktail party is taking place on
Saturday, August 20, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the lovely Seasons of Southampton on 15
Prospect Street, Southampton New York. This year’s event will benefit the Ellen Hermanson
Breast Center of Southampton Hospital. Tickets are available online at

We are holding elections for the 2012 SBAA Board at the Annual Meeting/Potluck on October 2, 2011.

The positions that are up for reelection are:

- President - 1 yr term
- Vice President - 1 yr term
- Treasurer - 1 yr term
- Recording Secretary - 1 yr term
- Corresponding Secretary - 1 yr term
- Two-Year Trustee - 2 positions
- Someone to fill the remaining year of an unexpired term to replace a Trustee who cannot complete his full 2-year term

We also need someone to take on the responsibility of Newsletter Editor. This responsibility entails writing the monthly newsletter, reproducing it, and mailing it out. Attending Board and General Meetings would be helpful to obtain the info needed for the newsletter.

We also need volunteers to take on other responsibilities such as Chair of the Annual Membership Exhibit.

The following is the current slate of nominees. Anyone can throw their hat in the ring if they would also like to run for these positions; see further info below.

RECEPTION FOR THE ARTISTS: SUNDAY, JULY 24, 1-4PM

An object that is designated as a flag -- whether national, personal or ornamental -- is purposeful and symbolic. Like painting, flags are rooted in the distinct conveyance of an idea. Since Betsy Ross stitched those first 13 stars into a circle, there have been over 27 iterations of the American flag, each one signifying a precise adjustment in meaning. From the patriotism of Childe Hassam to appropriation as in Jasper Johns' Flag and David Hammons' African American Flag to the fierce protests against Dread Scott for his 1989 installation at the Chicago Institute of Art, the flag -- graphic, plastic and ripe with content - is an ongoing artist's muse.

As the face of a nation, the flag itself - any flag, in any country - can be a powerful tool for dissidence as well as patriotism. The solid green of Libya; color triunes used by Lithuania, Thailand, France; the sleek graphics of Botswana, Columbia, Germany and club pennants, banners, markers, nautical flags and decals - each represent a concept that is as rich in imagery, color and graphic design as it is in political, personal or national content. In concept, however, flags are plastic. As a tool for communication they can function symbolically or literally; they might adhere to a fixed pattern or be fluid in theory or philosophy or perhaps, like painting itself, they might serve as a statement of personal identity unrelated to politics.

Flag Day opened to the public on June 15th and will continue through September 4, 2011. An artist's

The Gallery at 40 South is proud to collaborate artistically with Eddie Rehm in a Solo Exhibition titled "Startling Conflictions". Eddie Rehm is a New York artist who was invited to exhibit here in his local home town area after exhibiting nationally and throughout Manhattan. With his belligerent take on his own life experiences, societies and thought provoking display of artistic expression we were excited to give him full artistic control of the gallery for his exhibit. His works have been displayed throughout New York , Chicago, Milwaukee and Pennsylvania. His artwork has been reviewed and displayed in print / online publications / blogs such as NY Arts Magazine, Islamic Arts Magazine, N.Y Artbeat, Arthash, The N.Y Optimist, Magazine 1975, Artefuse, Art is Spectrum, City Arts LES, Dans Paper, several online blogs, Patch.com, South Bay Arts Association, Long Island Art League and the Brookhaven Arts and Humanities Council. He has also been selected and accepted to be in the "2011 International Contemporary Masters" hardcover book that will be distributed to museums, collectors, galleries, Miami Art Basel and all throughout Barnes and Nobles stores/online.

Eddie is affiliated with local Long Island art groups such as the South Bay Arts Association, Brookhaven Arts and Humanities Council, New Millennium Modern Art Group and the Long Island Art League. The modern/post - modern will not consist of perfect execution but of a concept analogous to the moral of the times. Rendered in his own artistic expression throughout the gallery. The installation of artwork will question the viewer literally by emphasizing a message or story conveying the artists life experiences and societies. Chaotic, disorientating and belligerently cluttered depictions of everyday life inside the three window theory by Sigmund Freud. The one window we all see, the one window you can only see and the window only others can see about yourself or a society. Hopefully challenging the viewer or participants in a memorable experience that will resonate with them. Creating a memory, good, bad or indifferent that carries with you an emotion or thought provoking experience to question any or all thoughts outside your own moral fiber. The Gallery at 40 South is proud to present "Startling Conflictions" by Eddie Rehm in his upcoming solo exhibition. "Art to Heart" Benefit for the Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital.

Chris Taylor, Jeanne Salucci and Mary Samuels will be exhibiting at the Holiday Inn Express at 3131 Nesconset Hwy in Centereach

May 29 - July 9 with a reception June 8th 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

There will be raffles of artwork and various prizes, to benefit the Children's Hospital.

Holiday Inn Express owner John Tsunis supports both local artists and local efforts to raise funds for Stony Brook Children's Hospital. The gallery will feature six-to-eight-week rotating displays of artists' work; a part of the proceeds will benefit the children's hospital. "We're all working together not only for the children's hospital but for the betterment of life in general," said Tsunis, who also chairs the children's hospital fundraising task force.

Since there is a large range of subjects where we were last week and there is vehicle access to sketch from your car, we are going to go back the same site as last week. The time is the same as last week, I set it up to start at 4:30 for those that can make it early, if you can't make it until later, that's fine, that's why I set the time until dusk so that the window of sketching opportunities is a lot better for those on various schedules.

You need to take S Main St/Middle Road to Seaman Road. Follow Seaman Road South to Brown's River Road, which should be the 2nd road on your right. Take that to the the end until you reach the waterfront and we will be sketching there. It's a good location for either sketching from the car or out in the open.

"Venus" of Bayport Vandalized!

The Venus of Bayport is a local Bayport Landmark on McConnell Avenue…. Or WAS.

If you haven’t seen it, … well… it’s too late. It was vandalized recently and is no more. The 7 foot tall sculpture “Venus of Willendorf” was created by Bayport alumna Irene Lap Banse of plaster, styrofoam, steel rods and an outer layer of plaster covered in figerglass resin with a concrete base. It was Irene’s senior project as a student of the Hartford Art School in Connecticut, and has resided on McConnell Avenue since 1975.

The sculpture became a local legend and landmark for many years until vandals -in the early morning hours of Sunday April 10th- tied it's legs with nylon roping and attached it to the rear of a vehicle, tore the entire sculpture from it's home in her mother's garden - killing rose bushes and Easter plants, disloging the rock garden and dragging it through the streets leaving a wake of crumbled mess along the railroad tracks in Bayport! It was found by Irene and a police officer in many pieces (along with Irene’s heart). The head was last seen on someone's lawn on Oakwood Avenue but the person who saw it did not know what they were seeing at the time. It was gone when they went back to get it the next day. The base was found in the swamp further down the tracks from Lotus Lake. SCPD and the MTA are investigating.

Discovered: Arthur Pinajian

The fascinating story surrounding the discovery first broke in the New York Times in March 2007, in a feature article titled, “Closing on a House, and a Life’s Story, Told in Art.” After Pinajian’s death in 1999, five decades of accumulated artwork was found stacked up in the run down garage and attic of the Bellport Village cottage he shared with his sister from 1973 until his death in 1999. He had left instructions for his collection to be discarded in the town dump. Fortunately for American art history, Lawrence E. Joseph, the best-selling author of Apocalypse 2012 bought the cottage and rescued the collection just in time. A feature story about the artist and his life was included in the August 2010

issue of American Art Review magazine.

A collection of mostly small works including illustrations from the 1930s has been recently assembled and will be exhibited at Bellport Arts & Framing Studio Located at 147 South Country Road Bellport New York. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a Pinajian. Exhibit will run From March 18 through April 24, 2011 with an opening reception on Saturday March 19, 2010 from 4 to 6pm.
